After losing their game against New Mexico State the Aztecs came together postgame on January 4, 2025 in San Diego, Calif.

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State women's basketball team fell for the third-straight time at home, losing 68-57 to San José State on Wednesday night at Viejas Arena.

Veronica Sheffey led the Aztecs (14-7, 3-5 Mountain West Conference) with 13 points and Adryana Quezada had 10 points, but Amiah Simmons scored 23 points for the Spartans (9-11, 2-5) and had 11 points in the second quarter when they took over the game.

"“I’m disappointed. I thought San Jose Staté outplayed us for the majority of the game,” head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said. “I thought they were the tougher team, but this is an opportunity to learn.”

It was clear the Aztecs were affected by this loss more than previous ones, as after the game ended the team huddled at mid-court standing in togetherness.

Terry-Hutson said the message was that "we need to stay together."

The goal set in the beginning of the season to win a championship is still on the radar and head coach says the team needs to stay consistent to thrive for the rest of the season.

In the first quarter SDSU held SJSU scoreless for 8:40 and didn't allow a second basket until 9:27 in the second quarter. The Spartans went on a 7 point run to tie the game, then had another 9 point run that gave them the lead for the rest of the game.

Forward Kim Villalobos said the team can improve on ball sharing and consistency.

"I think that is what got us every win this season," Villalobos said.

SDSU gave 15 turnovers while SJSU had 16. The Aztecs bench was outscored by the Spartans by 21-10 points, and SJSU made eight 3 pointers while SDSU made just two.

The Aztecs host first place UNLV at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Viejas Arena.
