Raiders suffer heartbreaking loss to Chiefs on brutal last-second turnover

Unbelievable. The Las Vegas Raiders dropped their eighth consecutive game, 19-17, as the Kansas City Chiefs jumped on a last-second fumble to seal a wild Black Friday victory. 

It was a slow start for the Raiders, who put just three points on the board in the first half and mustered 107 passing yards. Meanwhile, a red-hot first half for Patrick Mahomes in which he went 15-24 with 192 yards and a passing touchdown had the Chiefs up 10-3 heading into the locker room.

In the third, Aidan O'Connell and Brock Bowers found their stride as Las Vegas began to chip away. A 33-yard touchdown to Bowers late in the third quarter cut the deficit to 16-10 as the offense was finally finding their stride.

A 58-yard strike to Tre Tucker on the first play of the fourth quarter helped the Raiders grab their first lead of the game as O'Connell collected his second touchdown of the afternoon.

Kansas City managed to re-grab the lead with 9:57 remaining on a 32-yard field goal from Matthew Wright. 

Ultimately, the game came down to one final drive from O'Connell and the Raiders with 1:56 remaining from their own 8-yard line. The offense managed to shred their way down the field thanks to big catches from Bowers and Jakobi Meyers.

Las Vegas found themselves at the Kansas City 32 with just 16 seconds left and in prime position for Daniel Carlson to try and drill the game-winner. However, disaster struck as center Jackson Powers-Johnson prematurely snapped the ball off of O'Connell's chest on a 3rd and 3 play, allowing the Chiefs to jump on the ball and reclaim possession.

Kansas City's last four victories have now come in one-possession games, while 9 of their 11 wins on the season have come in such situations. With the win, they also managed to clinch a playoff berth.

For the Raiders, it would have been their first game all season without a turnover. Now sitting at 2-10, they are even with the New York Giants for the worst record in football.

O'Connell, Bowers take over

The quarterback-tight end duo managed to bring life to an offense that had produced only three points in the first half. 

Bowers, the rookie sensation, had arguably the best game of his young career so far. After having just 3 catches for 21 yards in the first half, he finished the day with 10 catches total, 142 receiving yards and a touchdown.

The 21-year-old now has at least 10 catche sand 120 receiving yards in two of his last three games while managing to find the end zone in three of his last four.

He was critical in the comeback attempt for Las Vegas, making numerous impressive grabs to keep the offense from stalling out.

Bowers now leads the entire NFL in receptions (84), is 3rd in receiiving yards (884), and is fifth in yards after catch (440). He continues to make an incredibly strong case for offensive rookie of the year and is sure to be a key part of the solution as the Raiders try to turn things around.

As for O'Connell, he displayed a valiant effort in what was only his third start of the season. The 26-year-old even managed to outproduce Mahomes, throwing for 340 yards and 2 touchdowns on 35 attempts. 

Mahomes finished with 306 yards and a touchdown, completing 26/46 attempts.

After the game, O'Connell spoke to reporters and took full responsibility for the late fumble that cost Las Vegas the game. "It was completely my fault...I started clapping...Jackson did exactly what he should have done and I clapped too early."

It was not the result that he would have hoped for, but O'Connell certainly proved that he has the heart to hang with the NFL's best. With five games remaining to close out the season, he will look to keep his momentum rolling and find a few victories in the process.

Carlson's kicking woes

Raider's kicker Daniel Carlson, who had gone 28/28 on field goal attempts and extra points since September 29 entering Friday, failed to remain as accurate.

Carlson finished the day 1/4, making only his first kick of the day early in the second quarter from 27 yards out. The rest of the way, he missed a trio of field goals from 56, 55 and 58 that slowed the momentum for Las Vegas.

His final kick, which came from 58 with 2:21 left as the Raiders trailed 17-19, was not close and the Chiefs reclaimed possession with promising field position.

While none of his misses came from what would be considered easy range, Las Vegas certainly would have hoped for more from their kicker, who is seventh in the NFL with 23 made field goals.

It was only the second time in Carlson's career that he has missed three field goals in a game.

Defense comes to play

The Raider defense certainly brought a solid performance on Friday, totaling a season-high in sacks as they took advantage of a struggling Kansas City offensive line.

Las Vegas managed to sack Mahomes five times, their most sacks in a single game this season. The Kansas City offensive line once again had a hard time keeping their quarterback upright, as he's now been sacked 32 times this year (sixth-most among starters). 

It was an impressive showing from K'Lavon Chaisson, who picked up 1.5 sacks. 

Maxx Crosby also picked up a sack of his own, bringing his 2024 total to 7.5. It was his first since October 20 against the Los Angeles Rams.

He has prided himself on availability all season long, now having played every single defensive snap for Las Vegas in their last six games.

The defense did a great job limiting the production of the Chiefs in the second half, holding them to three field goals and significantly slowing down Mahomes. 

In the second half, he went 11-22 for just 114 yards and did not throw a touchdown.

It was the first time that the Raiders have held an opponent under 20 points since a victory aganst the Cleveland Browns back on September 29. 

They will look to use the encouraging performance as momentum heading forward, having allowed the fourth-most points per game in the NFL so far at 27.8. Only the Cowboys, Jaguars, and Panthers allow more on average.

The Raiders will have a couple extra days of rest before traveling to Tampa Bay next Sunday to battle the Buccaneers.
