SDSU women's basketball improves to 5-0 taken at Viejas Arena (SDSU)

SAN DEIGO -- The San Diego State women’s basketball team improved to 5-0 with a 78-66 win at California Baptist Wednesday evening.

“It’s always big when you can win on the road,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “California Baptist is a really good program, and I’m really excited about the win and how hard we fought.”

The key note for the game is the Aztecs received contributions up and down the lineup with seven players scoring at least seven points. 

After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Aztecs led for the rest of the way, stretching their lead to as big as 16 points.

Veronica Sheffey with was the top scorer with 13 points. Kim Villalobos had 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks. 

Kim Villalobos is one of eight players in the nation with at least 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 175 assists, 150 steals and 75 blocks in her career.

Villalobos is in the top ten in school history in career games, rebounds and blocks. Adryana Quezada had nine points and seven rebounds. Jazlen Green scored a season-high 11 points

Freshman Nat Martinez had eight points, and a team-high five assists and Cali Clark had seven points and 10 rebounds.

SDSU gave up only 10 turnovers and had 17 assists. They outscored the Lancers 38-22 in the paint.

Four Aztecs are shooting 50% or better from the field: Erin Houpt, Adryana Quezada, Cali Clark and Veronica Sheffey.

San Diego State’s seven three-pointers was a season-high.

The Aztecs’ scored 34 bench points and have scored at least 30 points off the bench in four of their five games. Most recently against San Francisco on Saturday with a season-high 43 bench points. 44.2% of the SDSU’s scoring has come from their bench (32.5 of 73.5 points).

The Aztecs continue their road trip on Friday when they play at Cal State Bakersfield Friday at 6 p.m.
