LAS VEGAS – Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev scored, but the Vegas Golden Knights could not continue their home winning streak with a 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at T-Mobile Arena on Monday.
Adin Hill allowed four goals on 21 shots before being pulled for Akira Schmid in the second period.
“Some of our veteran guys didn't have the A-game in terms of transition and execution. I thought they were fumbling some pucks,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “So they could have been better and would have needed to be better tonight. But again, I think it was a team loss, to be honest with you.”
How the Goals were Scored
The Hurricanes came out scoring two goals in the first period. Eric Robinson tipped in a Sean Walker shot to make it 1-0. Then Jasperi Kotkaniemi extended it to 2-0 when he fired in his own rebound after Hill made an initial save.
Carolina continued its control of the game, as forecheck pressure led to a Jordan Staal shorthanded goal after Jordan Martinook stole the puck from Shea Theodore. Tyson Jost effective put the game out of reach with a tip-in goal, making it 4-0.
Eichel helped the Golden Knights avoid the shutout with a goal at 6:11 of the third period. Then with the goalie pulled, Martinook scored an empty-net goal to regain the four-goal advantage.
Barbashev scored his eighth goal of the season at 19:47 to cap off the scoring.
“We started the second period pretty good,” Vegas forward William Karlsson said. “Then, obviously, an unfortunate 3-0 goal there, and the fourth one shortly after that kind of killed our momentum a little bit. But there was definitely some good plays up there. Their goalie made some incredible saves. He had a good game. But 4-0, it's tough to come back.”
