CLEVELAND — The Chargers make it two straight with a dominant win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon. This is the second week that Los Angeles dominated every phase of the game with some young stars standing out in the win. With the victory, the Chargers are now 5-3 and right in the mix when it comes to AFC Wild Card race.
Here are takeaways from the Chargers win over the Browns:
Big plays give the offense a jolt in the first half
The offense was able to make big plays early and with the play of the defense the game got out of hand early.
On 3rd-and-21 in the first quarter Justin Herbert was able to find a wide open Joshua Palmer down the right sideline for a 28-yard touchdown pass to get the scoring started for Los Angeles.
The biggest play of the game came when Herbert bought time in the pocket to find wide receiver Quentin Johnston on 3rd-and-6 for 66-yard touchdown pass to put Los Angeles up 13-3.
The offense added another 15+ yard touchdown when running back J.K. Dobbins found a whole to score a 16-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. Dobbins later added another touchdown in the second half.
If the Chargers offense can make big plays like today’s game it could take this team to another level especially with how well the defense is performing.
A game of sacks!
Sacks were collected in this game like how Sonic collects coins!
Both quarterbacks were sacked six times each.
For the Chargers, four different accounted for a sack of Browns quarterback Jameis Winston. Led by pass rusher Tuli Tuipulotu with 2.5 sacks followed by defensive end Morgan Fox with 2.
The Chargers offense played well but had its struggles at protecting Herbert at times. Browns defensive end Myles Garrett sacked the Chargers quarterback 3 times in the first half alone.
Getting after the quarterback is key for any defense and protecting your quarterback maybe even more important.
The Chargers should be applauded for one and has to fix the other going forward.
Turnover party for the Chargers secondary
The Chargers defense made it tough on Jameis Winston and the Browns offense throughout the game.
The pass rush pressured Winston and forced him into some tough throws which the secondary took advantage of.
The Chargers intercepted three passes against the Browns.
The first of the three interceptions came in the third quarter with the Browns at the 4-yard line looking to make it a game as they trailed 20-3. After a deflection of the pass attended for receiver Jerry Jeudy, the ball ended up in the hands of cornerback Eric Molden for a touchback.
The Chargers secondary added another pick in the third quarter when Winston over throw a pass right into the hands of safety Alohi Gilman.
To finish the trifecta, with 10:44 remaining in the fourth quarter rookie corner back out of Maryland Tarheeb Still jumped in front of a pass intended for receiver Elijah Moore to end yet another drive for the Browns.
The secondary took advantage of a quarterback known for turning over the ball and it helped with the defense’s dominant performance on the road.
