The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Friday that right-hander Gavin Stone will be placed on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman spoke with the media about Stone, who will be unable to throw for 10 days. With the playoffs approaching, Stone won't have much time to prepare.

"I think it's either going to work or it's not," Friedman said on Friday. "I can sit here and say, I'm really optimistic, but we just don't know. We won't really know until we get there."

Stone has started 25 games for the Dodgers this season and has collected a team-leading 11 wins and five losses. Stone was the only starter on the team to not go on the IL until Friday. With an ERA of 3.53 in over 140 innings pitched, Stone's season is not over yet.

Friedman expressed uncertainty about Stone's return this season: "There is just so much unknown around it."

The 25-year-old started in four games last season and showed promise as a player. The Dodgers recognized Stone's potential and he's certainly proven himself this year. He has been compared to Orel Hershiser for his aggressive approach when facing batters on the mound.

Once again this season, the Dodgers will end the year without a pitcher reaching 162 or more innings. A total of 17 different pitchers have started at least one game for the Dodgers this season and 11 of them have also spent time on the injured list. Stone led the team with 25 starts and had not missed a start until now.

Dave Roberts mentioned over the weekend that Stone doesn't have enough left in the tank after completing five innings on Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Stone began to feel discomfort in his shoulder and underwent testing.

The Dodgers have recalled RHP Landon Knack and LHP Justin Wrobleski to join the rotation at a critical point in the season. They have also optioned RHP Michael Peterson on Friday.
