Dodgers' bullpen blows five-run lead, Padres walk-off in extras

The San Diego Padres secured a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Dodgers, who squandered a five-run lead for the second time in three games, in the 10th inning at Petco Park on Tuesday night.

Donovan Solano pinch-hit in the 10th inning with the bases loaded and hit a single down the third-base line past a diving Kiké Hernández.

The Dodgers' bullpen lost another game. The most significant play of the game happened in the ninth inning. Machado hit his second solo home run of the night, followed by Jackson Merrill's game-tying homer off Treinen. 

Treinen has had a rough time in his last two appearances. He was caught by Alex Bregman's walk-off home run last Saturday and then blew the save by allowing two home runs in the ninth.

Despite the loss, right-hander Tyler Glasnow pitched seven strong innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out eight batters on 102 pitches. With an 8-6 record and a 3.50 ERA, Glasnow reached as high as 99 mph on his fastball, which was very effective tonight.

During his second start following his return from injury, Glasnow seemed to be growing more at ease as the game went on.

Shohei Ohtani led off the game with a walk, then immediately stole second base (28). Ohtani finished the night 0 for 4 with 10 strikeouts over his last six games.

Gavin Lux hit a sacrifice fly, marking his 33rd RBI of the season. Andy Pages stepped up to the plate and delivered a hit, allowing Smith to score and marking his 30th RBI of the season. Shortly after, Cavan Biggio smashed a two-run home run to right field, his fifth home run of the season.

The Dodgers got off to a strong start, scoring five runs in the first inning, but then went quiet for the rest of the game. The Padres finished the night strong, scoring six unanswered runs.

It took seven pitchers for the Padres to slow down the Dodgers. Right-hander Matt Waldron went four innings, allowing five hits and five runs. He got a no-decision on the night, striking out six batters and throwing 81 pitches.

Padres reliever Robert Suarez picked up the win after coming out in the 10th and getting three straight outs, as the Dodgers left the extra-inning runner on second.

The Dodgers left the game with a 5 1/2-game lead over the Padres, who were fighting to maintain their position in the third National League wild-card spot. San Diego has a 7-2 record following the All-Star break.

On Wednesday, Dodgers left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw (1-0, 4.5) will pitch his  second start following his season debut last Thursday. The Padres are going with right-hander Dylan Cease (10-8, 3.50), who will is making his first start since throwing a no-hitter last week.
